Destiny curious what the Western RPG turn-based , after years of silence , suddenly one after another out of the shadows and look out on a market chock full of nostalgia , as the ” new generation” does not seem to like too much of their presence . After playing in his review of Diablo III console and an exciting Shadowrun : Returns is the time to see what awaits us in the new Aarklash : Legacy, the game developed by French company Cyanide Studio , the team that has distinguished itself over the years for games Games of Thrones series , of Orcs and Men and the less exciting Impire .
Players miniatures enthusiasts will surely have heard of Confrontation , a strategic board game created across the Alps and set in the world in perpetual war Aarklash . Just over a year ago there was the first title set in this universe warlike , which literally split in two between the critics who found him , even with flaws, a great title and who placed it in the worst way . Undaunted , the developers took what was good and started the development of a new chapter , a short distance from its predecessor, is about to come ( a matter of a couple of hours now) on our PC through Steam . Without delay then , let us see if this time the title Cyanide succeed in obtaining unanimous approval .
Aarklash Legacy Evidence
THE CONSPIRACY OF BANKERS
When you start a war there is always someone who makes money . This is true in the real world and it is true in the fantasy world of Aarklash . The Dark Lords of Acheron and the Barons of Alahan are two guilds in conflict since time immemorial , years of endless battles have seriously affected their economic resources to continue the fight and were forced to seek outside help. Luckily for them , behind the two warring factions operates Goldmonger , a bank that lends money at high rates , so that the operations to be financed equally from both sides ( who knows what they got the idea , Ed.) Of course, not always the debtors weld in a sudden their debts and that is where we come in , at the head of a team of four mercenaries called Wheel Sword we have to go to collect the debts acting by hook or by crook , needless say that you will almost always with bad manners . Our team will be initially formed by a team from the classical roles : Denzil , a goblin thief adept at hurting and perform critical hits , In , a beautiful sorceress to use even her as DPS ( damage per second) ; Wendaroo the healer and Knokka , a centaur tank to be sent to the front line to take most of the enemy fire . Our team during the adventure will join four other characters who will be in a different way to play these four roles , the game offers us these additions in an intelligent way : when we find a new partner we got to play enough with others, so well know what our favorite or not.
The story chronicles the adventures of our bizarre team struggling with a mission that becomes more and more intricate and dangerous , in spite of this the script is not particularly striking , the story never bored while not involving as it should do such an adventure . Complicit in this also the characterization of the protagonists that has not been treated properly , the protagonists are very beautiful to look at, but are anonymous and banal dialogues basically do not improve the situation. The character design is very unique, so much so that our characters initially seem a little ‘ out of place, within a dimension Fantasy rather classic , made up of knights, orcs brutes and decorated according to the canons which are also more common in our four heroes with their bizarre shapes and colors , which stand out as cosplayers in a church. Fortunately after a few hours the context becomes a little ‘ more homogeneous and the adventure will be enriched by other outlandish creatures , while not eliminating never quite this feeling.
The narrative , as well as the gameplay, of Aarklash : Legacy are very linear , the game does not offer moral choices or the ability to ramble , to give an idea of the game is much closer to the style of Final Fantasy 13 RPG’s that Westerners as Fallout 2 or Baldur ‘s Gate. You enter an area, you make out all the enemies , you read the rest of the story and move on to the next zone . Exploration activity is quite limited , although the maps are fairly small trunks full of secrets containing parts for our equipment , find it all but it is quite simple , sometimes we will be proposed some puzzles , but never anything that would put under serious effort our gray matter . From time to time our team will split at a crossroads, but the reunion will always be a short time later . Some areas have secret optional boss , considerably stronger and at the same time more rewarding in terms of loot . The interaction with the game world is virtually absent, you attack enemies and collect the falling off them , everything else is nice to see, but it is nothing more than an outline.
THE ART OF WAR
The real heart of Aarklash : Legacy is not the history or background of the characters, but the combat system . The developers have tried to recreate in a more dynamic skirmishes between thumbnails , without abandoning the strong strategic component and the result is more than satisfactory. The game takes liberally from the fighting of the MOBA as Dota 2 , League of Legends and old school RPGs like Baldur ‘s Gate, to propose it in one of his key . Each of the four characters in our team has four skills that we can use with ‘ QWER ‘ , or with the mouse, and almost all are targeted : for example, the ability to care in a straight line , regenerating both our allies and opponents, if will be on the line of action . This element gives an extremely important strategic component of our battles: place each component in the right way will be crucial to win the fights . To allow players adequately balance every action there is a break tactic with which we can organize a strategy and give our heroes a sequence of actions that will have to make as soon as possible. If you have played Baldur ‘s Gate then probably you will find yourself quickly at ease , since Aarklash : Legacy proposes a model substantially simplified , but no less strategic , otherwise , a short tutorial will explain how to best use the skills to your disposal. Every fight is a real war where there simply click on the enemies remaining still , if you want to survive from the first minute you will understand that it is crucial to find the right combination of attack and defense always keeping in mind that the enemy spells are always avoidable , but also the your can damage your team if misguided . In Aarklash : Legacy there is no healing potions or mana and objects that we will find will be used in the equipment , finished every fight the protagonists will be completely regenerated and allies dead to rise again without conceding a penalty.
Like any role-playing game is a character growth system , at every level up each character will have a skill point to spend on a specific skill tree and each skill is upgradeable according to two different branches , it’s up to you to choose the road that interests you most . However, looking at the evolution of the skills you will immediately notice how some of these , at high levels , lack of balance , as if to push in a certain direction , you will be so strongly directed to make certain choices. The equipment of the heroes is reduced to four slots that we can fill with all the pieces found along the adventure : as expected, the best objects will be assigned to the heroes that will be used more frequently , but it is always good to look for a balance between all equipment components , in such a way as not to come clothes of cardboard in the sections where the team is divided . The game does not offer any kind is the economic system and what you wear will be recovered by breaking down monsters , discarding everything that is not to your liking , in addition, the title offers four levels of difficulty with the easiest and if you can roam freely without worrying about of avversarsi , already in ‘ Normal ‘ ” the challenge level will rise considerably. This , even down to the first boss . The AI responds very well to our actions.
Technically, the game looks good, the isometric view that seems to be back in fashion allows you to appreciate detailed scenes and full of atmosphere , our characters were modeled with care and the result is seen . Too bad for the lack of interaction and linearity , explore why such a world would have been a joy to behold . The sound effects and music are within the range of the genre, are good but not particularly striking ; instead dubbing is top-notch and the voices are well-aimed for each of the protagonists.
IN CONCLUSION
Aarklash : Legacy is without a doubt a good game, most likely will not go down in history , but it is hard to think that this was one of the objectives of the developer. If the linear narrative and the lack of freedom of action lowered a bit ‘ overall judgment , artificial intelligence and competitive fun and challenging combat system make it a very interesting product for those more interested in hitting, rather than to speak or read pages of dialog. If you are looking for a strategy title , but at the same time instant , then Aarklash : Legacy could give you many hours of pleasure .
